Just for Kids: School Bus Rules That Will Keep You Safe!

The big yellow bus is the safest form of transportation for kiddos to get to school, but they need to follow a few guidelines to ensure their safety! Parents: take a look at the following list and go over it with your little ones. It will help them stay as safe and comfortable as possible on their ride to school!

Around the Bus:

  1. Get to your bus stop 5 minutes early so you don’t have to rush around.
  2. Stay with your parent or another trusted adult at your bus stop until the bus comes.
  3. Always stay at least 5 big steps away from the roadway.
  4. When your bus arrives at your bus stop, make sure it stops completely and the RED LIGHTS are flashing before you start walking towards it to get on.
  5. NEVER walk behind the bus. Your driver can’t see you back there!
  6. Always stay at least 5 big steps away from the sides and front of the bus on your way to/from it.
  7. If you drop something near the school bus, tell your driver. They will help you retrieve it safely!
  8. If you need to cross the street, make sure you look LEFT, then RIGHT, then LEFT again before you start crossing!

On the bus:

  1. Walk, don’t run, up the stairs and down the aisle of the bus.
  2. Stay sitting in your seat the whole time the bus is moving – this means keeping your back against the back of the seat and your bottom on the seat!
  3. Keep your feet and bags out of the aisles. You don’t want to trip other kids getting on or off the bus!
  4. No sticking your hands or head out the windows.
  5. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  6. Use your inside voices. Your bus driver is distracted when it’s too noisy inside the bus!
  7. Wait before the bus comes to a complete stop before you get up out of your seat.
  8. If you see anything that you think is unsafe or bothers you, you should tell your driver. The bus driver is your friend and wants you to feel safe and happy on the school bus!
  9. When you get on or off the bus, it’s important that you WALK, not run, on the stairs and be careful that your pockets, straps, etc. don’t get caught on the railings or handles.

All of these rules might seem a bit overwhelming, but most of them are just simple, common sense tips that you follow already! If you’re ever confused about anything or feel nervous about anything, simply ask your bus driver! It’s their #1 goal to get you to school and back safely and comfortably, and they’ll be more than happy to help you with whatever you need.
