5 Advantages of Having a CDL

5 Advantages of Having a CDL

For those who don’t know, “CDL” is short for Commercial Driver’s License, and it allows its holders to drive all sorts of, normally large, vehicles such as buses, construction vehicles, and tractor trailers. Not many people nowadays are opting to get their CDL’s, and there seems to be a negative stigma surrounding the topic. We’re a bit confused as to why that is, when we consider all the advantages of holding a CDL:

Job Security

The unemployment rate in the United States is holding steady at a 49-year low, recorded in October. This means there is a shortage of workers across the country in many job fields, but especially in CDL driving positions. If you’re looking to get into a field where there are plenty of opportunities to go after and the need for these roles isn’t fading away in the foreseeable future, consider getting a CDL!

Higher Employability

Even if you find yourself wanting a career doing something other than driving, having a CDL can still help you out! For example, if you applied for an office job at a trucking or shipping company, your CDL might help you really stand out against the competition since they’ll see you have hands-on industry experience. Regardless of where you choose to apply, your CDL would be an indication of your willingness to learn and an intriguing conversation starter!

Working in a Mobile Office

What is a commercial vehicle but a mobile office? Whether you drive long-haul and get to travel the country, or short-haul and get to experience how your local area changes with the seasons, you’ll sure see a lot more sights than if you were sitting in the same office 8 hours a day, 5 days a week!

You’ll become a safer driver

Getting your CDL is not too difficult, but it certainly isn’t a walk in the park. You’ll have to do a bit of studying and practicing in order to earn your CDL, and you might learn a thing or two in the process that you overlooked while testing for/driving with your standard driver’s license!

You’ll face new situations every day

Being a driver is by no means a mundane job; the conditions of the roads and traffic change every day, as does the scenery for long-haul drivers. If you drive a vehicle that transports passengers, you’ll meet new people often and your regular passengers will have a new story every day!
