School Van Drivers – Non CDL

Position Description

The role of a School Van Driver is to safely transport students to and from school. As a professional driver, you are expected to meet high standards of conduct. A Rohrer Bus Service driver is more than a professional driver and is expected to meet standards of conduct higher than those of other professional drivers. Student passengers and their parents place a great deal of confidence in you!

Position Details)

Transport students and customers in a safe, courteous manner, by following all traffic laws, Department of Transportation regulations, and local rules and regulations.

  • Check and keep in proper working condition all safety equipment.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections each day:
  • Check oil, coolant level, belts, and anything else under the hood (checking for leaks of any kind).
  • Check for body damage, tire pressure, broken lens caps, etc.
  • If the van is equipped with a wheelchair lift, open the lift and inspect to verify that it is in working order.
  • Check emergency equipment for contents and condition of mounting as well as making sure they are in working order. Make sure the fire extinguisher is fully charged. Look inside the First Aid and Body Kits and check contents if not sealed. Open the reflector box and make sure you have three reflectors.
  • Check windows are clean with no cracks.
  • Ensure driver’s area is clear of all objects.
  • Check all gauges for proper operating readings.
  • Check to make sure all lights are in working order.
  • Check to make sure the 2-way radio or phone is on and is in operating condition.
  • Make a final check of all your gauges, mirrors, seat belt, and brakes before beginning route.
  • At low speed, make an operating inspection by checking your brakes, steering and listen for smooth operation of the motor. Watch carefully for other vehicles as you pull away. * Clean interior of van when needed.
  • Ensure that a list of approved loading zones for the route is kept in the vehicle. * Preserve vehicle equipment and avoid excess service and repair cost by checking and filling out of daily maintenance reports.
  • Be alert and on time when reporting for work, driving schedules and field trips, etc.
  • Inform your Supervisor when van is in need of maintenance and/or repairs.
  • Fuel and keep proper records of fuel and mileage as required.
  • Slow down and look in both directions before crossing a railroad.
  • Use 4-ways when crossing a railroad track.
  • Stop only at designated stops. No unauthorized stops allowed.
  • No fueling with students or clients on board.
  • Slow down to posted speed limit in a school zone when the lights are activated and use the 4-way flashers.
  • Attend safety meetings as required.
  • Encourage students to behave in a safe and orderly manner during transit.
  • Inform school administration (as per district policy) in writing of any behavioral problems on the van so that proper action can be taken.

  • You must have a thorough knowledge of state and local traffic laws and regulations.
  • Must observe all traffic laws, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation regulations, and local rules and regulations
  • Must pass all background checks, drug screens, and clearances.

  • Neat and clean, as a symbol of the entire school system.
  • Must be able to read, write and have the mental capacity to complete required paperwork and records.
  • To be able to communicate with students, school personnel, and employees.
  • Be courteous in relationships with: School District Officials, co-workers, teachers, monitors, parents’, students, public, etc.
  • Attend service training sessions as well as departmental meetings when required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must hold a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania driver’s license and physical certificate, and reliable transportation.
  • Required to follow all policies and procedures as detailed in the employee handbook.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Lifting the engine hood of the vehicle, assisting students/clients out of the emergency door or windows.
  • Must be able to work in various conditions including, sitting, sometimes for long periods of time, climbing, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, and reaching.
  • Employee may spend part or all of the day exposed to sitting in a vehicle and withstand outdoor temperatures and conditions.
  • Our drivers must be physically qualified to drive and meets the requirements described in Chapter 71.3 in the PA Code
  • Careful to refrain from using profanity.
  • Well rested, so that you are free from fatigue.
